Choosing A Lathe

Bed Type Follows The Part

Sixty models is a lot to read through. Send the part instead: the largest diameter, the length, the material and the tolerance, and we will name the two or three that fit and say why.

  1. Flat bed for weight

    A wide flat bed carries heavy, long work and damps the cut. It is the right choice for shafts, rolls and anything needing a steady rest, and it is easier to load with a crane.

  2. Slant bed for chips and speed

    Chips fall into the conveyor instead of piling on the ways, and the turret sits closer to the spindle centreline. Best for repeat production of medium parts.

  3. Vertical for diameter

    Once the part is heavier than it is long, gravity works with you rather than against you. Flanges, rings, wheels and gearbox cases belong on a table, not between centres.

  4. Y-axis when it saves a setup

    A power turret and a C-axis pay for themselves the moment the part would otherwise move to a machining centre for a keyway, a flat or a cross hole.

What is the practical turning limit on these flat-bed CNC lathes?

The group runs from a 500 mm chuck job up to 2 m swing on the standard frames, with the heavy series carrying 1250–2500 mm swing and 2–20 m between centres. Remember the working figure is maximum turning diameter over the cross slide, not swing over bed — on the HT65 those are 650 mm against 890 mm.

Can these machines handle bar and tube work through the spindle?

Yes — large spindle bores are a design point of the group. The HT65 carries a Φ106 mm main bore, and the gang-tool machines feed small precision parts from bar. For pipe with couplings already fitted, step up to the pipe threading lathes with their oversized through-bores instead.

When do I need a steady rest, and are they available here?

Once the unsupported length runs past roughly ten diameters, deflection starts to show in the finish, and a steady becomes cheaper than scrap. Steady rests for long shaft work are catalogued across the group — quote the finished length and smallest diameter and the right frames get quoted with the machine.

What keeps the ways accurate on a hard-worked flat-bed lathe?

The beds are cast in one piece in resin sand, aged before machining, and the way faces are hardened by ultrasonic-frequency quenching, with saddle faces lined in Turcite. That combination is what lets a flat bed take interrupted cuts year after year without the geometry walking.
