Choosing A Lathe

Bed Type Follows The Part

Sixty models is a lot to read through. Send the part instead: the largest diameter, the length, the material and the tolerance, and we will name the two or three that fit and say why.

  1. Flat bed for weight

    A wide flat bed carries heavy, long work and damps the cut. It is the right choice for shafts, rolls and anything needing a steady rest, and it is easier to load with a crane.

  2. Slant bed for chips and speed

    Chips fall into the conveyor instead of piling on the ways, and the turret sits closer to the spindle centreline. Best for repeat production of medium parts.

  3. Vertical for diameter

    Once the part is heavier than it is long, gravity works with you rather than against you. Flanges, rings, wheels and gearbox cases belong on a table, not between centres.

  4. Y-axis when it saves a setup

    A power turret and a C-axis pay for themselves the moment the part would otherwise move to a machining centre for a keyway, a flat or a cross hole.

What does a pallet changer actually save on a horizontal centre?

Spindle idle time. While one pallet is cutting, the operator loads the next, so the spindle keeps working through part changes. On box parts needing three or four faces, the pallet plus tombstone also removes re-clamping — which is where most inter-face position error is born.

What table sizes do these horizontal centres run?

Indexing rotary tables from 500 × 500 mm up to 1250 × 1000 mm across the group. The rotary index is the accuracy story: four faces machined in one clamping stay true to each other in a way four separate setups never will.

Why do horizontals handle chips so much better than verticals?

Gravity. With the spindle horizontal, chips fall away from the cut into the conveyor instead of settling on the part and being re-cut. On cast iron and long unattended runs, that is finish quality and insert life, not just housekeeping.

Is an HMC worth 2–4× the price of a VMC for my work?

Only if the volume and geometry use it: multi-face box parts in real batches, where pallet automation and one-clamping accuracy pay every hour. For single-face plate work or short mixed runs, the honest answer is a vertical centre and better fixtures — we quote both ways when the case is close.
