Choosing A Lathe

Bed Type Follows The Part

Sixty models is a lot to read through. Send the part instead: the largest diameter, the length, the material and the tolerance, and we will name the two or three that fit and say why.

  1. Flat bed for weight

    A wide flat bed carries heavy, long work and damps the cut. It is the right choice for shafts, rolls and anything needing a steady rest, and it is easier to load with a crane.

  2. Slant bed for chips and speed

    Chips fall into the conveyor instead of piling on the ways, and the turret sits closer to the spindle centreline. Best for repeat production of medium parts.

  3. Vertical for diameter

    Once the part is heavier than it is long, gravity works with you rather than against you. Flanges, rings, wheels and gearbox cases belong on a table, not between centres.

  4. Y-axis when it saves a setup

    A power turret and a C-axis pay for themselves the moment the part would otherwise move to a machining centre for a keyway, a flat or a cross hole.

What does the Y axis on a turn-mill centre actually buy me?

Off-centre features. With only X and Z, a driven tool can cut features on the part centreline; the Y axis lets the same clamping take milled flats, keyways, cross-holes and rigid tapping positioned anywhere on the face or diameter. That is the difference between "a lathe with live tools" and finishing the part in one go.

When does done-in-one beat a lathe plus a machining centre?

When re-clamping costs you the tolerance or the schedule. Concentricity between turned and milled features survives because the part never leaves the chuck, and one queue replaces two. If your milled content runs to hours per part, though, a separate centre keeps the spindle cutting — we will tell you honestly which side of the line your part sits.

What turret drives the milling on these machines?

A BMT power turret with a C axis on the slant bed, so turning, milling, drilling and rigid tapping all finish in one clamping. BMT mounting matters: the driven holder bolts to the turret face with keyed location, which holds the milled features true after every index.

Do the turn-mill centres take a tailstock for shaft work?
